报告摘要:The Symplectic Shell Model (SpSM), is a group theoretically inspired alternative to the so-called no-core shell-model (NCSM). As these two models span the same (complete) shell model space, they yield identical result. However, the SpSM can be shown to yield results that are typically within 1% of the corresponding NCSM results in model spaces that are many orders of magnitude less than that of the full space. This in turn enables studies of heavier and more complex systems that cannot be reached using the NCSM. Details regarding the “group theoretical magic” that enables this will be shared, including clear articulations of linkages with earlier models, starting with the simplest Bohr-Mottelson picture of nuclear structure. Some additional benefits of the SpSM framework will be proffered.

报告摘要:Understanding the structure of atomic nuclei is a long-standing many-body problem in physics. The model spaces grows conspiratorially with the number of nucleons in a nucleus, making ab initio (from first principle) calculations beyond the reach of even modern super computers. And yet the observed structures show regular features – simplicity within complexity. I will discuss an underlying group theoretical construct that can be used to identify coherent paths within the infinite spaces that can be used to reduce the problem to a tractable subset of states that can be used to understand the overarching dynamics of nuclear structure many-body challenge.
